Class Times and Location:        

B days for 1.5-2.5 hours. Class will run from August until May. Psychomotor and Final Exam in early May. The class will be held in the Sevier CTE Center located on the Richfield High School campus, room B118. Class times are Monday through Thursday from 12:30-3:00pm and Fridays from 11:30am-1:25pm.

 

Class Fees and Fingerprints:            

$70 National Exam, $115 State Fees with Background check. Fingerprints are done at no charge at the district office. They are done by appointment, usually on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. You will need to call the district office at 435-896-8214 to make the appointment. You must get a form from your teacher prior to going for your fingerprints.

 

College Credit:     

9 credit hours offered through Snow College Concurrent Enrollment. $30 one-time registration fee and $5 per credit ($45). Students are expected to take the course for college credit.

Textbook:             

Brady Publishing - “Emergency Care Textbook” 13th edition (2016) by Limmer and O’Keefe. Provided to high school students at no cost. Electronic version available for $94.

 

Application:         

Found at https://health.utah.gov/ems/certification/application.pdf. Can be completed online with pdf reader. Students print off application and attach a copy of their driver’s license and TB test.

 

Course Objectives:

To successfully complete all requirements for National Registry EMT Certification. This course is designed to provide the student with advanced instruction to improve the quality of emergency medical care rendered to victims of accidents and illnesses. Topics include anatomy and physiology, disease processes, assessment and patient stabilization, proper use of equipment such as automated external defibrillators, blood glucose monitors, airway adjuncts, extrication, ambulance protocols, and practical skills sessions. Reinforced are legal, ethical, medical, and cultural issues, scope of practice, documentation and communication skills, and infection control.

 

Parent Access:
Parents are required to join the class as an Observer. As an Observer, a parent can easily see grades, due dates, upcoming assignments, and can participate by giving comments. Information on how to become a parent Observer on Canvas may be found here.

 

Class Prerequisites:

American Heart Association BLS and CPR/AED for Health Care Providers (offered during the first week of class).

 

Utah Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (BEMS) Criteria for EMT Certification:

  • A high school senior.          
  • Must be 18 years of age to take the national exam, and to ride as a trainee on local ambulances.
  • GPA of overall 3.0 is recommended.
  • “C” or better in Biology.
  • All students must submit a copy of a negative TB test, a copy of your driver's license, fingerprints, and the application fee.
  • Recommended courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Emergency Medical Responder, and/or Certified Nurse Assistant.
  • Physically able to perform duties of an EMT
  • Minimal instructional time- 120 hours (actual 163 hours)
  • Minimum of 100 patient assessments including vital signs
  • Minimum of 10 assessments on real patients (hospital, ambulance, clinic, etc.).           
  • Emergency room experience enough to understand the operation and procedures.
  • Successfully complete a psychomotor exam and written exams.
  • Determined competent by instructor and medical director, on all required procedures.
  • Demonstrate professional demeanor in the classroom and during ride along hours.
  • Must maintain an 80% on all skills and class work by the end of the first semester or the student may be removed from class.
  • All fees paid in full by the deadlines posted.

 

Grades:

NREMT Basic examination requires the student to complete the course with an 80% average (rounded to nearest tenth).

Materials:

Textbook, notebook, and pen/pencil to class daily. Tablets and/or laptops may be used in class as long as they are being used for school-related material.

 

Make Up Policy:

Make up work is the student’s responsibility and is usually required to be done other than during class. All tests are announced two to three days prior. If the student is absent the day of the test, it will be made up on the day the student returns to class. For extended absences, a timetable will be developed for the student.

 

Behavior and Conduct Expectations:

It is a privilege to attend this class and therefore, proper behavior is mandatory. Students will sign a Performance Agreement along with a parent or guardian prior to participation.

  2. Respect and Attention,
  3. Punctuality, and
  4. Preparedness and completion of all assignments.

 

Students who attend classes sporadically, do not participate, fail to complete all assignment in a timely manner, show incompetence, and who show a lack of interest in the course, may be dropped from the course at any time. Remember that other students are ready to take your place if you choose to not work hard! This is a college class, and will be taught as such. Please plan on working hard and doing your part. The reward at the end will be worth it!
